USGBC California’s PolicyPalooza 2013
ADVOCACY DAY Wednesday, April 17th
USGBC California @Green California Summit
Thursday, April 18th & Friday, April 19th
April in Sacramento is a special time for USGBC California. Spring has taken hold, the old trees
have leafed out, and the Legislative Session is in full swing. It is time for a Day (or, this year, days) at the Capitol. We follow up our epic 2012 Advocacy Day celebrating the Year of the California Greenbuild with even bigger plans: PolicyPalooza 2013, comprising three full days of meetings, sessions and convening.
Starting the morning of April 17th, USGBC Advocacy Leaders from around the state will gather to meet their legislators and regulators (as well as each other) in what is always an uplifting event pursuing our mission of transforming the built environment for the greater good. USGBC California is sponsoring three bills this legislative session and supporting a number of other initiatives. We’ll have plenty to talk about. AB127 (Skinner) seeks the removal of toxic flame retardants in insulation; AB341 (Dickinson/Gordon) aims to streamline CALGreen procedures and policy and AB572 (Atkins) supports the piloting of CO2toEE, a financial mechanism designed to create an asset class from energy efficiency in buildings (think Cap & Trade for the built environment). In addition, USGBC California has continued support for Prop39 implementation bills SB39 and AB39 in Sacramento and around the state, arranging testimony on the many health benefits of green schools at Senate Appropriation Subcommittee hearings in San Jose, San Diego, Los Angeles and Fresno.
In addition to members of our host Capital Branch, we will be joined by Jason Hartke, Jeremy Sigmon and other USGBC Advocacy staff throughout Advocacy Day, at our annual working
luncheon and at educational sessions. Later Wednesday evening, we’ll also be joined by a host of
guests at our gala “Green Hard Hat Award” Reception.

This year USBGC California has joined forces with Green Technology Magazine to become an official Educational Partner for the 2013 Green California Summit. We are putting on a mini-Greenbuild of informative and entertaining programs. There will be a six-session USGBC California Track devoted to featuring leading voices across a range of important advocacy issues as well as a number of sessions devoted to Green Schools topics. USGBC 2011 Leadership Award Winner Greg Kats will be keynote speaker, and the USGBC California booth will face the temporary installation of the Neighborhoods Go Green! Exhibit before it moves to the Capitol for the rest of April. Click here for more information.
